Doug Jemison – Varsity Assistant
Doug Jemison is a Middletown graduate and former Middie basketball player. He continued his basketball career at the University of San Francisco and played professionally in Finland and Holland. Doug also coached professional basketball; he coached the Toronto Raptors with Butch Carter. Doug has been an assistant for Coach Ronai during his entire tenure as varsity coach of the Middies. Doug also assisted five previous Middie coaches at the varsity level.
Doug and his wife Andrea, a teacher at Vail Middle School, have one son, Justin, an engineering student at the University of Cincinnati.
Shay Hensley – Varsity Assistant
Shay Hensley is a 1993 Madison High School graduate. Coach Hensley earned many awards while playing high school basketball, including several First Team All Conference Honors, Madison High School Career Points Leader (1046) and A.P. All-Ohio Special Mention. Shay has coached at Madison, Middletown Christian, and served as the head coach at New Miami. He also coached the Middies Sophomore Basketball Team and returns this year as a Varsity Assistant Coach.
Coach Hensley is a supervisor at Norvell’s Turf Management. He and his wife Keri, a teacher at Wildwood Elementary, are the parents of Dade, Lani, and Alea.
Tyrone Turner – Varsity Assistant
Coach Turner is originally from Detroit, Michigan. He attended Miami University, Oxford, where he received his Bachelor of Art in Music Education. He is currently teaching music at Vail Middle School.
Tyrone has been coaching with the Middies basketball program for eight years and has served in many capacities. He is looking forward to another exciting season teaching these young men the fundamentals of basketball and what it means to be a MIDDIE.
Coach Turner also serves as the head coach for boy’s tennis and assists with girl’s tennis programs at MHS. He coached the boy’s doubles team to the state finals in 2007, where the Middies won the championship match.
Marcus Smith – Junior Varsity Coach
Marcus Smith is a 2003 graduate of Roger Bacon High School. He was a member of the 2002 Division II Boys Basketball State Champion Team at Roger Bacon. Coach Smith continued his basketball career at the College of Mount St. Joseph, where he earned the award for Defensive Player of the Year. He coached freshman basketball at his alumni, Roger Bacon High School, and the Shining Star A.A.U. 17 and under team. Coach Smith is currently a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati, where he is finishing a master’s degree in sociology.
Kelven Moss, Sophomore Coach
Kelven graduated from Middletown High School in 2001 and was a three-year varsity letterman. He received many basketball accolades throughout his high school career. Coach Moss attended Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. He played basketball at the collegiate level and pursued professional basketball, but fell short due to personal circumstances. After graduation, Coach Moss began teaching physical education at Espiritu Community and Development Corporation for grades 7-12 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was also served as the school’s varsity basketball coach. In the last few years, Coach Moss has been a substitute teacher in the Middletown City School District. This is his second season coaching for the Middies. He has a three-year old son, Isaiah Meade-Moss, who brings joy and teaches Coach Moss new things everyday!
Alfred Milton - Freshman Coach
Alfred Milton is a 1984 MHS graduate. While at MHS, he played three years of varsity football and basketball. Alfred was the starting quarterback and starting guard for the Mighty Middies football and basketball teams during the 1982-1984 seasons. He played on the last Middie basketball team, the 1983 squad, to reach the Final Four.
Alfred earned a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University. He was the starting guard for Miami University, Middletown, as well. Alfred coached basketball in Panama City, Florida. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mortuary Science from Cincinnati College in 1999. He is the father of McKenzie E. Milton.
Karl Gaston - Strength Coach
Karl Gaston is in his sixth year as Middletown Boys Basketball Strength Coach. He works with the JV and Varsity teams with pre and post-season conditioning. He is a retired firefighter/medic, after twenty-four years of service. Gaston is a motivational speaker and volunteers with many local and national organizations, including being Director of the End Zone Club Youth Program, a board member with the Middletown Community Foundation, a speaker for the American Youth Football program, MiddFest International Communications Committee and many others.
Gaston attended Middletown High School, but graduated from Lemon Monroe High School. He participated in football, basketball and track and went on to play defensive back for the Iowa Lakes Community College football team for two years.
Gaston is the father of four children, Jordan, Destinee, Tevaras, and Brian.
